Corona at Domes Crowns Local Champion!
Last weekend on March 8, 9 at Domes Beach, in Rincon, Puerto Rico, local surfer Gabriel Escudero secured his first career victory in an exciting twenty-five minute Final over Virginia Beach visitor Michael Dunphy. His victory was by the slimmest of margins, as Escudero's two-wave total was 15.06 to 15.00 for Dunphy. Surf conditions for the last heat were 4 to 6 feet, with occasional overhead sets. Organizers were thrilled that the swell began to rise on mid-morning Sunday after the two-day event began in small conditions. While the winds were side-shore and blustery for much of the weekend, they actually encouraged some high-flying aerial maneuvers by the "new school" surfers like Cam Richards and Leif Kelaki Engstrom.

Corona Extra Pro Surfing returns to Puerto Rico!
On the weekend of October 12 and 13 exciting pro surfing action returns to Puerto Rico at scenic Middles Beach near Isabela. This will be the 24th edition of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit, which was founded in 2001 by Werner Vega, surfboard shaper and owner of Hang Loose Surf Shop, also in Isabela. “Since we began twelve years ago Corona Extra has been the biggest supporter of Puerto Rican pro surfers” said Mr. Vega. The continued support of Corona Extra shows a huge commitment to the sport and it’s athletes. The contest will have a total purse of $37,000, divided into $25,000 for the Men and $12,000 for the Women, which means that we will be able to pay the winner of the Men a first prize of $10,000. The Women’s champion will receive $5,000”.
A field of 60 or more contestants is expected that will include competitors from the Mainland East Coast, California and Venezuela.
The Middles contest will also kick off the points race to crown the 2014 APSPR (Association of Professional Surfers of Puerto Rico) season’s champions. The 2013 defending champions are Brian Toth, of Isabela and Alexis Engstrom, of Montauk, NY and Rincon. The race for the title is comprised of the points that the competitors collect in three events. After Middles next month they will then compete at Domes next March, and again at Middles in the Fall of 2014.
The last event of the Corona Extra Circuit was won by Gabe Kling, of St. Augustine, Florida in huge and challenging conditions at Marias Beach, in Rincon, in March. In that event the giant size of the surf forced organizers to assemble a group of personal watercraft operators who carried the surfers out into the lineup. Paddling out was simply not possible in the time limit of the 45 minute heats. “That was one of the most exciting contests I have ever been in” said Kling. ”Without the skis, I don’t think I would have even made it out”.
The giant swells that are pushed southward by cold fronts in the Northern Hemisphere are the attraction that has lured International surfers to Puerto Rico for fifty years.
The Corona Pro Women's winner Amy Nicholl earned $5,000 for her win. "Conditions were really meager on the first day, so I was really excited to be seeded into the second day thanks to my win from last October at the Corona Extra Pro. Today I just took it heat by heat, got a couple seconds, a couple firsts, and in the end of the day ended up on top, and I'm really excited about that," Nicholl said.
The best of the women's surfing on the final day was seen during the Women's round 2 Heat 3 came from Nikki Viesins who took the win with the highest single wave a 7.6 and highest heat total 14.37. Other standouts were Amy Nicholl with the second best heat total in the same heat a 12.43. The crowd also saw strong surfing from semi-finalists Liza Caban (Aguadilla, PR) and Alexis Engstrom (Rincon, PR/ NY).
On the Men's Pro side of the event Gabe Kling got his name on the $10,000 check. He defeated local favorite Josie Graves with a strategy of staying busy. "The wind felt like it was getting stronger during the final and a lot of times with priority in the mix I just like to catch a lot of waves and not worry about waiting on the perfect wave. So I just tried to stay busy and hope that priority worked in my favor and a couple times it did," said Gabe.
Josie Graves was the local favorite despite not having surfed Middles in about six months due to summer travels and a shoulder injury. "Something that was really special was that I hadn't surfed Middles in 6 months, my first wave was in my heat and I ended up making the final, so I'm stoked," said Josie.
