Swell expected for Corona event at Middles.

The current forecast for this weekend in Puerto Rico shows a 4' to 7' swell on tap for Middles, for the 26th edition of the Corona Extra Surf Circuit. "It may be windy", said Contest Director Werner Vega, "But we should have plenty of waves to run the event".
The original dates for the contest were October 25 and 26. However, Vega, who monitors the island surf forecasts carefully, decided to postpone until November due to the swell predictions. As it turned out, the conditions last month, on the original dates, ranged from flat to 3 feet and poor for competition. "They were not the type of conditions in which we wanted to select our champions", said Vega. "Mother Nature" controls our playing field, and we want the competitors and spectators to enjoy the quality of surf that Puerto Rico is famous for." The contest will have a $25,000 total prize purse for the Men's division and $12,000 awarded to the Women.

Exciting Action in Stormy Surf For Day 1 at APSPR Corona Extra

MIDDLES, Isabela, Puerto Rico (Saturday, November, 2013) – The 26th edition of the Corona Extra Pro Circuit at Middles Beach in Isabela, Puerto Rico completed two rounds of women's and the first round and heats 1-5 of men's surfing. The competition ran throughout the morning in 3-5 foot bumpy surf. The surfers had to endure fluctuating wind and rain but the waves offered plenty of scoring potential and entertainment for the crowd.

Emily Ruppert (FL), Chelsea Tuach (BRB), Alexis Engstorm (NY/PR), Ornella Pellizzari (ARG) all surfed their way through two rounds to see themselves into the Semi Finals. The surfers were put to the test in challenging stormy conditions. Top performers of the day were Alexis Engstrom and Ornella Pellizzari. Engstrom surfed solid with smooth turns and good wave selection to hold down the highest wave (7.17) and the highest wave total (13.17). Pellizzari showed that coming to PR early to train for the event has paid off. She took her backhand to the Middles bowl to post one of the highest heat totals of the day (12.00). The semifinalists will continue their battle for the grand prize of $5,000 tomorrow. Also up for grabs is The Corona Extra Circuit Title which can be won by either Tuach or Engstorm.

The 26th Edition of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit will take place November 22 and 23 at Middles Beach in Isabela, P.R. This event will decide the circuit champions for both the Men's and Women's divisions. "Corona has just notified me that Coppertone Sunscreen Lotion will award the 2014 champion of each division with a $1,000 bonus" said Event Director Werner Vega. "This will be the first time we have awarded extra prize money to the circuit champs. From now on, we will try to continue this tradition and we aim to improve this award in the future".

The race for the season title is comprised of the total points that the competitors collect in three events. The current leader of the Mens title race is Gabriel Escudero, who has a total of 3255 points for the season, after winning the last event at Domes in March and placing second at Middles last October. However, several of his competitors are still in striking range, notably Wesley Toth in second place, who is less than a thousand points behind. Wesley won the last event at Middles in a close final over Gabriel. Also still in the running are Toth's older brother Brian, and Alejandro Moreda. Cody Thompson, from Jacksonville, is the highest rated Mainland competitor at equal third.

Corona Event in Puerto Rico Postponed until November

Event Director Werner Vega has been monitoring all the wave forecasts and consulting with marine forecasters on the island and issued the following statement. "All the information we have gathered indicates that small leftovers from the current swell will slowly fade during the coming week, becoming flat for the scheduled event dates next Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26."
